Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan and was observed with flowers being placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers.
Traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over the years - everyone needs to be reminded of the true meaning of Memorial Day and return to the solemn and sacred spirit of this day.
